About the Artist
J.D. Grieco is a contemporary sculptural wood artist based in Glendale, Arizona. For more than six years, he has maintained a full-time artistic practice creating wood sculptures that explore geometry, pattern, rhythm, and form through the assembly of individually crafted wood elements.
Drawing inspiration from the landscapes of the American Southwest, Grieco combines multiple wood species to create complex visual compositions that balance precision, structure, and organic expression. His work reflects a fascination with the character of each wood species and the relationship between individual elements and the larger forms they create together.
Grieco's work has been represented by On The Edge Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona, and he is a Juried Artist member of the Sonoran Arts League. His sculptures are held in private collections throughout the United States.
Artist Statement
Trees have always fascinated me—their individuality, their hidden stories revealed through grain, color, and form. Each tree grows in its own way, carrying a distinct history within. My work begins with a deep appreciation for that natural character and a desire to reveal it through sculptural form.
Working primarily with segmented construction, I create wood sculptures that explore geometry, rhythm, pattern, and movement. By combining multiple wood species, each with its own visual language, I build forms that no single piece of wood could achieve alone. Through repetition and structure, individual elements become part of a larger composition.
Every sculpture begins with an exploration of shape and pattern. Hundreds—and sometimes thousands—of individually crafted components are milled, cut, and assembled by hand. This process requires patience, precision, and an ongoing dialogue between design and material.
The finished work reflects both order and organic variation. Inspired by the landscapes of the American Southwest, natural forms, and geometric structure, each piece seeks a balance between complexity and harmony, inviting viewers to discover new relationships within the pattern and form.
